Lightworker Wellness

I want to tell you something I tell my patients in the quiet of the treatment room, because I think someone out there needs to hear it today: before I ever held an acupuncture needle, I was the person on the table. And I was not okay.

The part I don’t put on business cards

Years ago, I was living with severe depression and anxiety I could not control. If you have been there, you know the strange double-bind of it - anxiety insisting that everything is urgent, depression insisting that nothing matters, and the exhausting switch between the two. The people who loved me tried to understand. They could not, not fully. You can feel profoundly alone in a room full of people who care about you.

I tried what I knew to try. And then someone suggested acupuncture.

I will be honest: I did not expect much. I went because I was out of better ideas. And one treatment changed everything. It was the first time in a long time that my body felt like a safe place to live.

That experience did not just help me heal. It rerouted my whole life. I went on to train at the Academy of Oriental Medicine here in Austin, put in over a thousand clinical hours, and built Lightworker Wellness around a single conviction: the body knows how to heal when we give it the right support. I know that is true because mine did.

What anxiety actually feels like in the body

We talk about anxiety like it lives in the mind, but if you have it, you know better. It is the chest that will not loosen. The 3 a.m. ceiling stare. The jaw you find clenched at red lights. The stomach that drops before bad news that never comes.

In Chinese medicine, that pattern makes sense: anxiety is energy rising and racing - upward and outward - while depression is energy sinking and stalling. Two sides of one imbalance. Western research describes the same thing in different language: a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight that has forgotten how to come back down.

What acupuncture actually does about it

This is the part that surprised me as a patient and still amazes me as a practitioner. Acupuncture works on anxiety not by numbing you or talking you out of it, but by speaking directly to the nervous system - shifting it out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-restore.

The research is real and growing. A clinical review in the nursing literature found acupuncture produced significant anxiety reductions across patient groups (Errington-Evans, 2012 - PMID: 22070429), and a 2025 systematic review concluded acupuncture is effective for generalized anxiety disorder specifically (Lai et al., 2025 - PMID: 41316337). I go deeper on the mechanisms - cortisol, GABA, the whole picture - on my anxiety and depression page if you want the science.

But here is what the studies cannot capture: the look on someone’s face when their shoulders drop two inches and they realize they have not had an anxious thought in forty minutes.

What a session for anxiety looks like with me

If you are anxious about coming in - that is normal, and I planned for it.

We start by talking, as long as you need. There is no intake conveyor belt here; my practice is one-on-one by design, because emotional healing needs a safe container, not a busy clinic. Then you rest on the table, and I place a handful of very fine needles - most patients say they barely feel them, and within minutes most feel a wave of calm that surprises them. Some cry with relief. Some sleep. Both are welcome.

For patients who want to go deeper, I sometimes weave in esoteric acupuncture - gentle work with the body’s higher energy systems that I trained in under Mikio Sankey - for the emotional patterns underneath the anxiety. And if questions are swirling before your first visit, my FAQ page answers the practical ones.

Most patients feel a noticeable shift within the first few sessions. Lasting change - the kind where your baseline actually moves - typically builds over a series of treatments, and I will always be honest with you about what I am seeing.

If you are white-knuckling it right now

I am not going to tell you acupuncture is magic, and I will never tell you to abandon care that is helping you - acupuncture works beautifully alongside therapy and medication. What I will tell you is what I wish someone had told me sooner: there is a way to work with your body instead of fighting your mind, and it might be one appointment away.

If anxiety or depression has been dimming your light, I would be honored to help you find your way back.
